Homily by Father Paul Wharton

In the 6th Chapter of the Gospel according to John,

we see Jesus once more use something down to earth

to teach something spiritually important.

Just we we need to feed ourselves physically,

we need to feed ourselves spiritually.

We are created with a hunger and thirst for God.

Nothing else will satisfy.  Nothing else will do.

Fourteenth Century Mystic Blessed John Ruysbroeck wrote:

The inward stirring and touching of God makes us hungry and yearning;

for the Spirit of God hunts our spirit:

and the more it touches it, the greater our hunger and our craving.

We will die physically without food and water.

Our true selves created in the image and likes of God

will shrivel up and go into hibernation unless

our spiritual thirst is quenched and

and our spiritual hunger is satisfied.
